What We Love

  • The peace and tranquility of the property
  • The sense of history and the detailed architecture of a bygone era
  • Gathering for cocktails with friends on the screened porch
  • Walking the trails with the dogs
  • Admiring the views from the porches, and the second and third story balconies
Situated in the most picturesque corner of southwest NH at the foothills of Mount Monadnock and surrounding Dublin Lake is the Dublin Summer Colony. The Thistles, built in 1888, is one of 45 architecturally and historically significant, Victorian era summer "cottages" that make up the colony which was developed on mutual interests of arts and literature, with many notable figures in American literary, political and artistic life, summering there. The Thistles is sited for maximum privacy on 20+/- acres. A tree-lined drive accesses the 5,471 square-foot shingle-style Victorian, designed by noted English born architect Henry Vaughan, who also collaborated on several New Hampshire projects with Francis Searles. The high level of craftsmanship is evident throughout. Arched doorways, decorative moldings and original butler’s pantry with gleaming bead board glass cabinets blend with thoughtful updates and renovations. Plenty of windows, porches and balconies take in the views across the broad lawn to Mt. Monadnock. The five bedrooms (three en-suite) and five baths, large country kitchen, formal dining room, informal spaces, and large screened and open porches provide plenty of room for family, guests and entertaining. Further accommodations are provided among the six out-buildings. Behind the main house is a two-bedroom guest house, studio, indoor kennel, utility shed and three-car garage. The original carriage house, located down the lawn from the main house, has been converted to a charming three-bedroom guest house with a new, full foundation. This peaceful, very private setting includes gorgeous lilacs, gardens, open spaces and trails to abutting conservation land.
